History

Tia Maria® is one of the world's most legendary liqueur spirits, with an intriguing history that can be traced back over 300 years to Jamaica in the Caribbean.

The Legend: In the mid 17th century, when the island was in the grip of the brutal Colonial Wars, a beautiful Spanish noblewoman was forced to flee her home. In the chaotic flight, her maid had just enough time to safely snatch one of her mistress's most important family possessions - a tiny treasure box containing a pair of black pearl earrings and an old manuscript for a secret family recipe for a cordial. In her gratitude, the noblewoman named the rich dark drink Tia Maria after her faithful maid.

As fate would have it, the young noblewoman married and started her own family. On her daughter's wedding day, she started a tradition of passing along her family treasure box with the secret recipe to her daughter. At this time she gave the secret elixir a name Tia Maria in memory of her loyal servant.

Time passed and the recipe and legend were lost, until a prominent scientist and gourmet, Dr. Kenneth Leigh Evans discovered the missing treasure box with the manuscript still inside. Evans made it his mission to share the smooth and delicious cordial Tia MariaR with the world.
