Long Mountain

Introduction

Established after South Africa's first democratic elections in 1994, it is the Long Mountain Wine Company's philosophy to produce high quality, easy drinking wines, which can be consumed on their own or as a compliment to any meal.

The company's flagship is the Long Mountain range, which is now available in more than 30 countries around the world, and has grown to be the number one selling South African wine in Ireland and a leading player in the competitive UK market. Long Mountain's quality has been recognized by the renowned South African Airways tasting panel who, at the end of 2003, listed it on their flights for the second consecutive year.

History

At the Southern tip of the African continent where two mighty oceans meet lies Cape Town, gateway to the South African winelands. For more than 350 years, African, European and African cultures have met and mingled here in the shadow of its famous landmark, Table Mountain, creating a vibrant society rich in ancient and modern cultures.

Our winemaking history dates back more than three thousand centuries and blends the elegance of the Old World, with the accessible fruit driven styles of the New World.

Today, Cape wines are of a quality and style that are sought after throughout the world. Proud of our heritage, The Long Mountain Wine Company was established in 1994, after South Africa’s first democratic elections. The company takes it name from the dramatic Langeberg (Long Mountain) range, which extends for over 200 kilometres along the edge of the Breede River Valley in the Western Cape region of South Africa.

Here where the mountain range channels the cool easterly sea breezes down the Tradoux valley and along the warm grape growing regions of Robertson and Worcester is where we take root. The constant interplay between these ancient soils, soaring mountains, valley slopes and coastal breezes result in a natural environment exceptional in its biodiversity.

Long Mountain wines entice the world to discover the pleasures of an energetic, contagious lifestyle unique to this great land.

Brand Portfolio

Long Mountain CHARDONNAY

Long Mountain Chardonnay was made from selected parcels in the Rawsonville valley. This area lies tucked in between the Drakenstein mountains and the Breede River and has a rainfall double that of its neighbour Robertson and also a much cooler climate. The 2005 vintage shows ripe tropcial fruit aromas, rich vanilla butteriness and a full length complexity balanced by a crisp citrus acidity.

Long Mountain CHENIN BLANC

Long Mountain Chenin Blanc was made from selected parcels in the Rawsonville valley. This area lies tucked in between the Drakenstein mountains and the Breede River and has a rainfall double that of its neighbour Robertson and also a much cooler climate. The 2005 vintage shows citrus and subtle tropical flavours of guava and exotic pineapple with hints of zesty lemon.

Long Mountain SAUVIGNON BLANC

Long Mountain Sauvignon Blanc was made from selected parcels in the Rawsonville valley and Vinkrivier areas. Both areas are cool climate Mountainous on South facing slopes. The 2005 vintage is a combination of ripe tropical fruit tempered slightly by a rich herbaceousness. Fresh acidity carries through into a long finish of green peppers and ripe tropical fruit characters.

Long Mountain RUBY CABERNET

Increasing volumes of Ruby Cabernet are being produced from grapes grown in Rawsonville, which is showing great potential to become the most significant area for Ruby Cabernet in the future. This variety yields big crops naturally and is an early ripener. The mild summer allowed for even ripening and good acidity. The 2004 vintage shows some all-spice and bitter chocolate characters complimented by a mid palate of plum and cherry.

Long Mountain MERLOT SHIRAZ

Blackberry and plum flavours with sweet cherry like aromas from the Merlot are infused by black pepper and spicy elements from the Shiraz. Refreshingly unusual, this seemingly contradicting flavour spectrum of cloves and cherries somehow magically combine with harmonious and immense complexity.

Long Mountain CABERNET SAUVIGNON

Long Mountain Cabernet is our flagship wine and shows rich berries and a touch of mint along with a lingering nutty oaking. Elegant dry tannin allows for drinking well now. A wonderful balance of oak, cassis and cherry reminders.
