Hennessy

Introduction

Hennessy is proud of it’s long history. The company’s Irish founder, Richard Hennessy from County Cork, was so charmed by the region that he established a trading firm in the town of Cognac in 1765. Under the guidance of his son, James, the company expanded rapidly and took the name it still has today: Jas. Hennessy & Co. Eight generations of Hennessys have run this outstanding company, travelling then world and building the brand’s universal reputation.

History

When Richard Hennessy, the youngest son of Lord Ballymacmoy, joined the Irish regiment serving under Louis XV, he was 26 years old.

Following the battle of Fontenoy, Captain Richard Hennessy was garrisoned at Il de Re. Captivated by the light and harmony of the Charente region, he decided to retire from the regiment and stay in Cognac. From his new home Richard Hennessy sent several barrels of the local ‘eaux-de-vie’ (waters of life) to his family and friends back home. Such was the success of the delicious drink that on 10 September, 1765, he founded the House of Hennessy, symbolised by the arm and broad axe of his family coat of arms.

Today, more than two centuries later, the descendants of the founder are still dedicated to producing the finest cognac on the same site established by Richard Hennessy on the banks of the River Charente."
